How Do You Figure Out What You Can Recycle?

Sunday, January 29th, 2012

Article by Stephanie Foster

In some areas recycling is required. In others, it’s all but impossible due to a lack of facilities. How do you figure out what you can and cannot easily recycle in your area?

The simplest solution is to check with the company that handles garbage in your area. Many are also in charge of recycling too. If you’re lucky they’re already providing you with a bin for recyclables that you don’t even need to sort yourself. The information you need may even be on the company website.

Many are pretty picky. It’s not too uncommon for plastics recycling to be limited to #1 and #2 plastics in bottle form only. Others will take pretty much any kind of plastic.

Then there’s paper recycling. It’s generally not as restrictive as it used to be, but you do still have to be careful. Most won’t want food stained paper, paper towels or paper napkins. But it’s often not a problem to include glossy paper, envelopes with plastic windows or staples in with the paper.

Glass recycling can be a bit interesting. Glass jars are fine. Most companies ask that you not put in broken glass of any kind. They also generally don’t take light bulbs, glass from dishes, mirrors or windows.

If you have a local recycling company that picks up at your house but is a bit pickier than you’d like, it can pay to check out options for places you can bring your recyclables. Sometimes they’ll be within a reasonable driving distance. Just search for your area and include the word “recycling” and see if anything good comes up.

In general, recycling companies prefer that glass and plastic be rinsed. You probably don’t need to scrub things out, but a quick rinse isn’t a bad idea. It also means your indoor recycle bin won’t get dirty so quickly even if you don’t line it with a bag.

But don’t just think of the everyday little things. You can recycle big things and things you don’t often dispose of too. Just be picky about how you go about it.

Some electronics can be recycled. Be picky, as too many companies aren’t all that honest about how they recycle electronics. Sometimes they’re just shipped off to other countries, where the recycling is done in a rather hazardous and polluting manner. Check the e-Stewards website for reputable electronics recycling. You may even be able to mail your electronics in.

For cell phones that still work, consider donating it instead. There are companies that will send old cell phones to people in developing countries or domestic violence victims.

Compact fluorescent bulbs don’t belong in the trash when they burn out. They have mercury and really aren’t good for the landfill. But IKEA, Home Depot and some other stores may take them in. Check with your nearest location.

Don’t forget the reuse option, of course. Anything that can be reasonably reused consider offering up on Freecycle or donating to a local charity. That’s even better than recycling!

Recycling – Aluminum and Steel Cans

Monday, January 16th, 2012

Article by Mark Thomas Walters

Each and every year thousands of tons of trash is poured into landfills. Though we are in no immediate danger of running short on landfill space, this is expensive in terms of time, space, and energy invested, as well as the sheer waste of materials that will not ever be used again. With that in mind, consider these reasons to keep your aluminum and steel cans out of the landfill by recycling them.

1. Aluminum that has been recycled is used for new projects within 2 months. In contrast, it would take 200-500 years for that same to break down naturally if were just thrown away.

2. Metal cans can be exchanged for cash at lots of places. Various states offer five cents for each can given to them, and certain centers offer between fifty cents and two dollars per pound of cans recycled.

3. Recycled steel and aluminum are have exactly the same composition as ‘new’ aluminum and steel. Recycled metals are just melted down and then forged into new products, which can then be recycled again when they are finished being used.

4. On average, Americans recycle 105,784 cans per minute. The majority of that number is a result of particular communities working hard on special projects, and that is something that you should encourage those in your neighborhood to take up, as recycling can really help with bringing a community together.

5. Recycling is about more than just material savings, it is also about energy consciousness. Every aluminum can which is recycled saves enough energy to run a television for 3 hours; one pound of cans recycled will save enough energy to run it for four days!

6. The United States currently uses steel which is more than 65% recycled. That is not too bad, but there is definitely room for improvement. This proportion would go up significantly if more people knew that they could recycle their steel cans.

7. There are can crushing machines on the market that can be used to make the job easier, including some that can be made at home for almost no cost. This removes the a commonly used excuse that recycling cans takes up too much space.

8. The 100,000,000 ‘new’ steel cans made on a daily basis consist of 25% recycled materials. That is the equivalent of 25 million reclaimed cans versus 75 million completely new cans. If more people recycled, that number could easily jump to 50-50 and a huge amount of energy and resources would be saved.

So, the next time that you have ‘finished’ with a steel or aluminum can, take a moment to think about what you will do with it. Will you continue to be part of the problem? Or, will you join the increasing number of people who taking action in order to make the world we live in a nicer, cleaner place to live?

Do not be fooled into thinking that you cannot make a difference. It is just that mindset which is holding back the progress that we should already have made. By doing the right thing and starting to recycle, you will inspire and motivate those around you to start doing the same, and they, in turn, will inspire and motivate other people that they know. Therefore you can make a difference, and a big one too!

Things you can recycle to be greener and make money

Friday, January 13th, 2012

Article by John

As the world tries to become greener, thousands of people are paying more attention to how they can recycle old goods and belongings to be greener and potentially earn money. This article describes 5 ways in which you can help to be greener and also earn a bit of money along the way.

1. mobile phones – recycling your mobile phone collection is a great way to help the environment because a lot of the old circuits and components within them can be reused or melted down for other purposes. Millions of mobile phones are produced each year and with the increase of smart phones demand for old or unwanted phones is rising. Many companies now recycle mobile phones and pay for the privilege, buying your phone from you. Although smart phones are in extremely popular demand, older models such as the earlier Nokias are also bought for cash because of their reputation.

2. Unwanted gold and silver jewelry – because of the struggling economy, the price of gold bullion has increased immensely because it’s a safe tangible investment for banks to guarantee some level of capital. Trading any broken or unwanted jewellery is a very simple way of making some quick money. Although this form of recycling is more targeted towards making money, you are still helping the environment as you are putting precious metals back into the circuit rather than them sitting in your drawers collecting dust.

3. scrap cars – scrap car kent recycling is on the increase because of the soaring price of metal. Metal prices are soaring because many businesses would rather use recycles sources as supposed to new because of the cost. For this reason, demand has increased considerably for scrap car, resulting in many different companies offering to buy scrap cars for cash.

4. Old or unwanted clothes – the amount of money we spend on clothes is ridiculous. Rather than throwing old clothes away, give them to a local charity shop or put them on an online auction site like eBay. Remember that you are responsible for describing the clothes accurately so any stains or damages should be mentioned, and you have to consider postage and packaging charges that may apply.

These items can all be recycled in a safe, environmentally way so that you are doing your bit for the world. Although the biggest earner is selling a scrap car, there are many ways to recycle your items and ensure you are a better greener working for a brighter future.

Recycling – can you be bothered?

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

Article by Simon Young

Recycling – can you actually be bothered?

I would like to start by talking about the recycling of DVD and CD cases, discs and paper material as this relates most closely to my industry but I have a further and more important discussion point to make later in the article. With the billions of both CD and DVD cases out there their recycling has now become big business – but most people are still disposing of these materials in their normal bins and not specifically recycling.

There are many companies in the UK now that specialise in plastic reclamation – normally grinding the waste materials into flakes, pellets or scraps and sending the resultant plastics to China, normally for use in the automotive and building materials industries.

The trouble with the types of plastic contained in DVD and CD cases is that they refuse to break down when in landfill sites meaning they will never bio-degrade. When asked in a survey if they had thrown away broken DVD or CD cases in the last year 72% of customers surveyed had done so (something that can only increase with the demise of these technologies over the next 5 years) but when the same group were asked if they had recycled these types of plastics a surprising 32% said that they had done. However that said, recycling services across the UK vary greatly in the different materials they accept in peoples green bins for recycling – overwhelmingly the people surveyed which said that they had not recycled regularly had not done so because ‘it was inconvenient and not easy enough to understand’, some sited the fact that collections were ‘not regular enough’ mainly being every two weeks and that often items which they expected to be recycled were rejected at the point of sorting their recycling bin.

In the last year recycling rates have risen for all areas of the UK and in some cases are rocketing up – but are these figures to be believed? Apparently according to government figures the national average is around 20% of rubbish is recycled, I don’t know about you but I don’t think my green bin would equate to 20% of the volume of my standard wheelie bin and seeing as its only collected once every other week it tends to fill up quickly with a lot of dead space this means items that would normally go into it often end up in the normal bins.

Many respondents to our survey cited the fact that their kitchen wasn’t big enough for recycling! – We took this answer to mean that they just didn’t have enough room for a couple of extra bins. Or does this come back to the fact there is no ‘real’ incentive to recycle for most people.

So what is the answer? I personally believe that people cannot be bothered on the whole with recycling, does this mean we should introduce fines for people who don’t recycle enough, or should there be a monetary incentive / reduction on council tax for those that meet quotas? And how on earth would such a scheme work? Who knows what the future is for recycling but there definitely needs to be some greater new initiatives and not just by local councils to justify their ‘eco policy compliance’! A national scheme is what is required to break the back of the ‘can’t be bothered’ attitude.
