How Old Computers Are Being Recycled Today

Monday, February 6th, 2012

In today’s fast paced environment of computer technology advancement, millions of old computers are getting new life through technology recycling.

Computers and accessories contain many elements and metals that can cause harm to the environment. Thus, a new branch of recycling that focuses on the best disposal practices for this equipment has emerged. It is appropriately termed technology recycling.

At this point you may be wondering how old computers are being recycled today? Two main tactics are employed to either bring new life to technology or dispose of it in an environmentally friendly manner.

There are several community focused organizations and charities that accept older computers. These outdated units are provided to Head Start programs, community education centers, and local schools. These programs allow access to computers and technology to individuals and groups that might otherwise not be able to afford such an opportunity.

Other companies exist that accept old computers for disposal purposes.

These companies dismantle the hardware into its various components such as plastics, glass, and metals. Each portion is then recycled in the usual fashion and eventually becomes part of another product.

With the rapid advance of technology occurring today, it is vitally important that we make use of these options when considering how to dispose of our computers.

If you would like to recycle technology, particularly outdated computers, check your yellow pages or online under the topic of recycling to find a center near you. In addition, your can also check with local charities or community organizations about making a donation.

Recycling Information – Dealing With Shredded Paper

Article by Joe Simpson

Many of us now have paper shredders in our homes, offices and classrooms. They are quick, quiet and inexpensive devices which help us destroy personal and confidential information with the minimum of fuss. However there is some issue which is often overlooked and that is the recycling element of shredded paper.

Many of us now have paper shredders in our homes, offices and classrooms. They are quick, quiet and inexpensive devices which help us destroy personal and confidential information with the minimum of fuss. However there is some issue which is often overlooked and that is the recycling element of shredded paper.

You may have thought, as I did, that recycling shredded papers would be no different from any other paper but unfortunately it is not that straight forward. Many recycling organisations won’t accept shredded paper for various reasons.

One of the major one is for safety reasons, processing shredded paper is actually quite difficult. Paper that is shredded is awkward to handle and sort, falls off conveyor belts, gets tangled in machinery and also represents a tangible fire risk. There is also a difficulty with sorting, many processing units are unable to sort or detect paper when its been reduced in size by shredding.

When you combine this with the fact that shredded paper actually reduces the fibre length of the paper. This will actually, reduce the quality and strength of any paper produced from this recycling. You can see why many companies would rather not deal with huge amounts of shredded paper.

So what’s the solution?

Well of course you should always check with your local recycling scheme, there are some companies who are set up to deal with shredded paper. If not try and reduce the amount of paper that you do shred, of course all confidential and personal papers should be destroyed but often we get into a habit of shredding everything.

The other obvious use of shredded papers is to help in composting, although it cannot obviously be recycled then – it can be used or disposed of much more easily. You should never risk not destroying confidential information but it’s always worth thinking of the best environmental option when possible.

Weee Recycling: Information Destruction Is Essential

Friday, January 27th, 2012

The risks of disposal of disks containing information that you might believe has been destroyed but has truly just been lightly erased consist of putting your self or your customers at risk for identity theft also as generating data offered to unscrupulous competitors. Even recycling a pc to comply with WEEE recycling regulations doesn’t incorporate proper data destruction strategies.

These strategies contain degaussing, in which magnetic patterns that conform to actual data are realigned so that the information is inaccessible and unrecoverable, shredding, which entails shredding media into really fine bits that can’t be reassembled, and software program wiping, in which all HEX values on the whole volume of a disk are overwritten using unique software. Inside the United kingdom, such software program should meet Data protection Act standards to be considered efficient for data destruction.

Laptops, which includes internal hard disk drives as well as other internal media storage devices, need to be recycled based on WEEE regulations (EU). Nonetheless, if data remains available on any component of the device just before, in the course of or after WEEE recycling procedures, it still poses a threat to your firm security. For that reason, devices that hold information and are subject to WEEE recycling regulations must undergo a thorough process of information destruction prior to recycling need to take place.

Hard drive destruction is totally imperative prior to WEEE recycling can commence. This is simply because even when a disk drive is seemingly erased, the info on it can be recovered and made accessible without having your understanding. Ensuring that an professional with security cleared personnel destroys the hard drive by approaches including degaussing and shredding will be the only way you can be sure that any data that was ever accessible on a drive that’s slated for disposal can in no way be accessed once more. Software wiping is suggested only for hard disk drives that can be reused right after the data stored on them is totally destroyed.

Media tape drives are also effortlessly accessible if they are not fully and professionally destroyed prior to disposal. Degaussing and shredding are probably the most suggested strategies for destruction of media tape drives.

Even CDs and DVDs which contain sensitive and confidential data really should by no means be disposed of without having making the information totally inaccessible. Total physical destruction of the media by means of precision shredding which is provided by professional media disposal firms will be the only way to make certain that data on a CD or DVD is fully inaccessible.

Flash memory cards, external memory sticks, and comparable devices need to also be subject to information destruction measures if they’ve ever held sensitive data. A specialist firm which handles data destruction really should be consulted concerning such memory devices as their little size makes it quite effortless for them to end up inside the wrong hands.

Today almost 30% of the ink cartridges are recycled all around the world. Through this procedure we can save a lot of primary resources and money.
